Hi all, my GFR rate has been dipping over the years and the last 2 blood tests have shown it go from 61 back to 65. It started at 76 three years ago and now my gp wants me to do a ARC urine test. Any suggestions as i, a bit concerned. I take Methotrexate and folic acid.

Thanks dawnybee

Hi Dawnybee - sorry to hear your blood test result have given you a shock - it's good that you're spotting it early. Your GP sounds on the ball and that's really good. I don't know much about eGFR rates because mine has been fairly stable over the past 6 months since I started having regular blood tests. I've just had a look and mine does wobble about some months. I've looked online and this looked like a good link - Love your kidneys - it's got good advice about lifestyle changes to diet etc. Especially important to drink plenty and avoid salt, (Also stop smoking and too much alcohol, but with RA you no doubt already have that sorted Huh !)

I think your GP may have said an ACR urine test - this is a simple explanation that I found helpful. It sounds like it's a fairly routine test and presumably your GP will discuss treatment plans when the results come back.

Let us know how you get on, because I'm on the same MTX and folic acid as you, and it's always useful to know what sort of things to look out for.

Hope you're not too anxious - Sylvia xx

Hi, slyvie, thanks for your reply.Smile The link was very interesting. I don't smoke but i have around a bottle of wine a week or maybe more if theres a celebration. I told my rheummy this in october and he said that was fine. He also said there would be cause for concern if the GFR goes to 50. He also said that 90 was a normal healthy reading and that the figures for me were in keeping with my results. However, its different when it stares you in the face! I must admit its really frightened me and i haven't been taking my methotrexate like i should. ( really silly i know, but it gets me annoyed when but for RA i wouldn't have taken it! Sad ) I haven't told my husband as he would really worry.

Ah well i guess i just have to wait for the results. Huh

Thanks again for the reply.Smile

Hi Dawnybee - your husband sounds like he has your best interests close to his heart!! Have you been advised to stop your MTX? It sounds as if you might be pre-empting the results because you don't know yet what they will show - have patience.

Are you sure you shouldn't talk to your husband? Surely your nearest and dearest would want to support you because you're clearly very upset by all this uncertainty. Just remember that anticipating bad news is nearly always worse than actually getting it, so try and focus on nice things to keep your mind occupied.

How are your Christmas preparations coming along? My son comes back from Uni today and we're off for a family get together tonight which should be fun. I'm so looking forward to seeing him again (no doubt he'll soon drive me nuts like he always did, but time apart dulls those memories and they seem a vague source of amusement with hindsight!)

Best wishes - Sylvia xx
